Eureka Christmas Fair & The Pebble Project
|
Eureka Christmas Craft Fair
The Eureka Christmas Craft Fair was a tremendous success. There were 108 entries from across all year groups, with a broad spectrum of goods on show. It was difficult for the judges to pick winners as it was obvious that a lot of effort and work went into all of them. After much deliberation a few were selected for some prizes. In honour of our late Deputy Principal, Ms. Gabrielle Moran, who was a Business Teacher and would have been a champion of Enterprise, her family have set up a Student Bursary Fund in her memory. Gabrielle always had a word of kindness or encouragement for those she encountered, so we should never underestimate the ‘ripple effect’ or positive impact that this can have on someone’s life. Hence the Gabrielle Pebble Project was conceived. The Pebble Awards were gifted by the Moran family in memory of Ms. Moran and are in recognition for creativity, endeavour and enthusiasm. We all still greatly miss Ms. Moran, Gabrielle, our colleague and friend. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. |
Some recipients of the Pebble Award were:
Jars of Joy by TY students Éabha Byrne and Ciara Murphy. Also in the photo are Paul Moran with teachers from the Business Department (Ms. Hopkins, Ms. Sheridan & Mr. Cornally). This project was selected for its business acumen – great presentation and marketing. The students received a Pebble Award and €200 prize. More photos on our school Facebook page.

The Stories of Kells 2020
"Kells has a long tradition of storytelling visually through Art. We can see this on the once brightly coloured etched panels on the Kells High Crosses and on the intricately decorated pages of the Book of Kells. The last year has been a very strange and significant time that will be marked in history. Taking reference from the decorative styles of the Book of Kells and the Kells High Crosses, each student designed and built a story panel illustrating their own experiences of 2020/21" - Anna Moloney
This Creative Engagement project was undertaken with the help and guidance of local artist, Anna Moloney. Anna was joined by a group of TY students to complete the project, the students connected with Anna weekly via Zoom calls. Their patterns and designs were developed before being hand built with ceramic clay. Each student completed a single tile which represented their memory or vision of living during the coronavirus pandemic. The artwork has been placed in the hallway for all to enjoy. Teacher: Ms. Glennon.

A Stitch in Time saves Nine!
The blue flowers symbolise HOPE. Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear the hardship today. This wonderful Creative Engagement project spans 7.5 m in length and was undertaken with the help and guidance of local artist, Jillian Gott. Originally started by the transition year class of 2019/20, they were unable to complete the project due to lockdown restrictions and remote learning. This year's TY class took on the task of completing the project with enthusiasm, connecting weekly with Jillian via Zoom calls. The pattern was developed and created using intricate cross-stitching. Each student completed a 30-centimetre square of the pattern, the 24 squares connect together to create the repeat pattern. The artwork now sits proudly in the GP area above the school's main entrance. Teacher: Ms. Glennon.

Darkness into Light - Pieta House
Thanks to all who participated in the Darkness into Light 10,000 steps a day challenge over the last week and to all who created the great colour and brightness around the school. Your kind donations will be forwarded to Pieta House www.pieta.ie
We have received the following message from a member of Pieta House: "In 2009, in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, 400 people set off on the inaugural Darkness Into Light 5km walk to raise funds for Pieta House. From small beginnings, the movement has continued to grow, and around 200,000 people now take part in the event annually. Our team of dedicated volunteers, in Ireland and overseas, return year on year to make the event a success and to help us all continue to raise awareness of Pieta and our services. Since Darkness Into Light began, our supporters have helped us raise almost €29 million, which has enabled us to keep our doors open and our service free of charge. On behalf of the clients and staff in Pieta, we would like to sincerely thank you all in Eureka for your wonderful support in helping us to sustain our life saving work, and we really hope you enjoyed taking on your 10,000 steps challenge. More than 80% of our income comes from public donations, so we rely on the generosity of supporters like you all. You make our life-saving counselling services possible. Through your kindness and generosity, you are ensuring that we can keep going and keep being there for people in crisis. We are so grateful to you for your support." Warm regards. The Pieta, Darkness Into Light team
Thanks also to Ms. Brady for coordinating our "Yellow Fundraising Day" along with the industrious Student Council. We really are "Brighter together!". Photos courtesy of Mr. Murphy will be available on the school website and Facebook page.

Tiktok's ideal body makes starving a hobby
Last week was National Eating Disorder Week (March 1st- 7th). Rang Oisín’s YSI project is based around this topic. Their aim is to spread body positivity and also get restrictions on comments on Tiktok’s, especially harmful one. There are many trends and hashtags that are very harmful to their generation.
According to a survey they sent out to Eureka students, of which 158 responded: 66 people said they rarely felt content with their own body, while 33 people said they never have. 108 people said that while scrolling on Tiktok they saw videos about body image and 109 people said they see negative/harmful comments in relation to body image, so we need to change this.
If you are struggling with an eating disorder or body image please do not be afraid to ask for help or guidance.

The umbrella of Eureka reaches far and wide, from past students to present, new students to old. Yet beneath this umbrella, we are all individuals - individuals who each bring our own unique sense of self, our own flair of creativity and our own sense of purpose. This fantastic installation features 139 mini umbrellas, each one designed and individually weaved by every first year in the school during the art taster block. While every umbrella is unique, collectively they form the creative and wonderful tapestry that is the heartbeat of Eureka. Meath Enerprize Awards 2020
Last Tuesday during Meath Enterprise Week three 5th year students Áine Rooney, Gráinne Nevin, and Katie Sheridan turned their BT Young Scientist project "Food for Thought" into a Business- selling food eco-rating shelf edge labels to supermarkets. The label barcode includes the distance the product travelled the mode of transport, the weight, dimensions of packaging, and time and energy spent in cold storage. An eco-rating label is then designed based on this information given to the girls by the supermarket. The label is green, orange, or red. Green meaning better for the environment. This label is then put on the shelf beside the product displaying the information to environmentally aware customers, improving their shopping experience, and encouraging customers to buy locally.
Their business "Food for Thought" was shortlisted for the Final of the student enterprise challenge 2020.

Comhairle na nOg
Comhairle na nÓg is the youth representative body within Meath County Council. Topics important to young people are identified, voted on, discussed and actions are implemented that have a positive impact.
Siún Smith was elected onto Comhairle na nÓg in TY through the Student Council and was voted in by my fellow members who attended the AGM in Navan in October 2019. They have meetings once a month in Navan and then once every two weeks when they are planning an event. They even held meetings throughout lockdown via Zoom.
Siún feels that this one of the best things she did in TY. She is only one year into a 2-year term and has learned and gained so much, including confidence in her voice and opinions and decision making, how meetings, councils, and committees work, and the different roles within them. She has made many diverse friends whom she has learned so much. She would encourage anyone to consider joining Comhairle na nÓg, especially if they are interested in current social issues and topics.

Eureka win Garda National Youth Award for our 'Never Home Alone' project
Students from Eureka Secondary School are delighted to have won the Garda National Youth Award 2020 for our YSI project 'Never Home Alone'.
Chief Superintendent Fergus Healy presents the Garda National Youth Award to Eureka students Nora Barry and Emma Gorman in the company of Principal Caroline O'Reilly, Lead Teacher Stephen McKee and members of An Garda Siochana.
Chief Superintendent of the Meath Garda Division, Fergus Healy, was on hand at Eureka to present the trophy award to class reps Nora Barry and Emma Gorman. Stephen McKee, the Teacher who oversaw the project said: ‘We are delighted to have won this award for our school. Loneliness is a major issue in Ireland today, especially so during these challenging times, and there are profound physical and mental health problems that are exacerbated by loneliness. Our students wanted to raise awareness of the negative health implications of loneliness. We wanted to engage people who may be lonely or at risk of being lonely, and encourage them to get active, meet people and get support. We also wanted to lobby the Government to allocate specific funding for community initiatives to combat loneliness.'
The 10-week Programme saw students take part in various activities with older people to help connect the generations and address the issue of loneliness and associated mental health problems in the local community. ‘Each week students met with the group of senior citizens and did a range of activities; ranging from us teaching senior citizens how to use the Internet; dancing, Arts n’ Crafts, Music bingo, to the senior citizens teaching us students how to cook!’ Nora Barry, student project manager continued: ‘We would like to sincerely thank the Senior Citizens involved and acknowledge the support of our Principal Caroline O’Reilly, Catherine McGuigan of Age Friendly Ireland; Meath County Council; Sergeant Dean Kerins, members of the Meath Older Persons Council, Shane Carolan of Prosper Meath, Aine Brady of Third Age and all our local Public Representatives. We really enjoyed the project and learned so much from the experience.'
This is the second time that Eureka has won this prestigious award. In 2018 our Transition Year students, under the guidance of Mr. Devine, won it for 'Social Media Through The Generations'.
